★editorial field research★
The field of illustration;
Illustration connects everything from high fashion and retail environments to animation and computer games, from political, editorial and street art to mainstream publishing.
★ideas and concepts:
This is a piece called "in memory of George Dyer' (1971) by Francis Bacon this piece is believed to be a way for bacon to deal with the grief since loosing his partner, after growing up having to hide and be embarrassed of his sexuality due to being bullied by his dad for his fashion choices and drawing of the female figure he wasn't able to fully explore his sexuality until he had settled into London at the late age of 20. By creating 3 separate images in the same piece displaying the hotel stair case, inside of the room and George dryers last moments of life. The deep darker tones in the middle image represent the hotel room in Paris where dyer committed suicide. Exploring art based off the hiding of sexuality and the shame that can come from doing so is a concept I intend to look further into.
★image making process:
Risograph by "chaos by Ariel"
screenprins by "blex bolex"
the image making process I find most effective are Risograph and screen printing, in both chaos by Ariel and blex bolex work it allows the designs to stand out and be bright and playful without needing black outlining.
★page layout and design:
these book designs are created by Jon Mcnaught who's a London based illustrator, printmaker and lecturer and creates comics. I love the comic style layout that mcnaught displays in his books, the limited colour pallet and limited change within his scenes. I've noticed he mainly works with dusky colours which create a melancholy mood and gives a sense of of mystery to his more simplistic designs.
★ magazine topic and genres:
anxy magazine
issue no:1 anger
issue no:2 workaholism
issue no:3 boundaries
issue no:4 masculinity
Anxy is a magazine exploring issues people tend to think are taboo subjects like personal subjects which people may feel embarrassed and ashamed about but this magazine shows you're never alone with the issues you face. I find this magazine inspiring as it faces a big range of subjects from peoples personal experiences to suggestions on things to watch and read.
★artists I take inspiration from:
Callaghan is an Irish illustrator based in south east London who creates hand drawn designs using a mixture of watercolour, Indian ink and isograph pens. I take inspiration from Callaghans bold coloured designs always depositing strong independent women with black outlining work around each separate colour.
